Hey, Fleming Island 👋
Well, hello September.
We’ve got a little bit of everything happening around the island this week. Homecoming is coming, there’s a new spot on 220 where sitting with strangers is kind of the point, and we found one very unexciting thing you should probably check anyway because it could affect your flood insurance.
Oh, and apparently summer has no intention of leaving quietly. Florida gonna Florida. ☀️
Grab your coffee, Diet Dr Pepper, or whatever is getting you through the week. Here’s what’s good around Fleming Island.

TODAY AROUND THE ISLAND
Storms roll in around 1.
Heat index near 102, gusts up to 23, and a few of them could drop heavy rain. The morning is the better half of this one.
Golden Eagle homecoming week 🎉

Homecoming week is almost here, and if you’ve got a Golden Eagle in the house, there are a few dates you’ll want on the calendar.
First, the one with a deadline: homecoming dance tickets are $45 and sales close Friday, September 4. Tickets are available through MySchoolBucks. The dance is Saturday, September 12, from 7:30 to 10:30 pm.
Then there’s Spirit Week, because apparently finding a normal outfit for school next week would be too easy.
Tuesday: Rhyme Without Reason
Wednesday: Meme Day
Thursday: Sports Day
Friday: Color Wars
Seniors wear blue, juniors purple, sophomores green and freshmen pink.
The Homecoming Parade is Thursday, September 10, followed by the homecoming football game Friday night when Fleming Island takes on Ridgeview at home.
And two dates for the parent calendar while we’re here: no school Monday, September 7 for Labor Day, and interim grades post in FOCUS on Friday, September 11.
What’s happening around town 📅

✨ New around here: Encore, where you sit with strangers on purpose

Illustration inspired by Encore Fleming Island
Most places sit you with the people you arrived with. Encore would rather you met someone.
The bar opened on County Road 220 at the end of July, and the seating is part of the whole idea. No reservations, no assigned tables, mostly communal ones. Encore says it was built for mingling and meeting new people.
Making friends as an adult is famously hard, and almost nothing is designed for it. A room where you sit down next to a stranger and have live music to talk about?
Honestly, not a bad answer.
It’s a bar first, with a small food menu, and it’s 21+ at all times, even if you’re only stopping in to eat.
The menu keeps the music theme going and leans into datil peppers. There’s even a Fleming Island Sauce, which obviously got our attention. 🌶️
And if you’re looking for an excuse to check it out, Encore has live music five nights this week. We’ve got them all listed above.
Encore is at 2015 County Road 220, Fleming Island. (904) 375-0232.
One more good thing: Check your flood zone 🏠
Okay, this one isn’t as fun as live music or a new place to eat, but if you own a home in Clay County, give it a minute.
FEMA is redrawing the county’s flood maps for the first time since 2014, and depending on where your property lands, the change could affect whether you’re required to carry flood insurance. Some properties are moving into a high-risk zone. Others are moving out.
The good news? You don’t have to decipher a giant government map to figure it out.
Clay County built a tool where you can type in your address and see what, if anything, is changing for your property. It takes about a minute, and this is one of those things worth checking even if you’re pretty sure you’re fine.
See something that doesn’t look right? You have until November 18 to speak up. Questions and appeals can be sent to [email protected]. Just know that a formal appeal needs supporting data, not simply an objection.
One minute now could save you a much bigger surprise later.
Before you go... tell me something good 💛
