Morning, Fleming Island 👋

Ninety-three today, and then it finally lets go. By Thursday, we're looking at 86 and breezy. After the September we've had, that's the good news.

Here's a week worth getting out for. 🌴

☀️

93° / 76°

HIGH / LOW

TODAY AROUND THE ISLAND

Patchy fog before 9, then mostly sunny.

Heat index up near 106, with a small chance of a storm between 3 and 5. Tonight stays dry.

🏈 Trivia at 6:30, football at 8:15, ten minutes away

Hibernia Pub is one of my favorite places on the island. Great food and an even better staff. And there's so much going on there every week that it's worth laying out properly.

Hibernia Pub and Top of the Tee sit beside each other at the Fleming Island Golf Club on Town Center Boulevard, so it's one address, and Monday night is a whole evening there.

General Knowledge Trivia runs every Monday, 6:30 to 8:30. Then the football starts.

And tonight is the big one: Monday Night Football opens its season with the Broncos at the Chiefs, 8:15. It's the first time Denver has ever opened a season in Kansas City. Hibernia Pub shows every Monday and Thursday night game all season, plus Jags and college.

Game-day specials include $1 wings and $1 domestic drafts until the first score, which is either a bargain or a reason to hope for a defensive struggle.

Happy hour runs Monday to Friday, 2 to 5.

🎖️ Thursday: three sheriffs, one library, free

Josephus Peeler, 1894. Charles Wilson, 1906. Theodore Shelton "Shelty" Cherry, 1913. Three Clay County sheriffs were killed in the line of duty within twenty years.

Local historian Bob Scallan is telling all three stories at the Fleming Island Library on Thursday, 6 to 7 PM, and it's free.

It's part of America 250, the nationwide programming marking the country's 250th year, and it's funded through the state library program. Adults only, 18 and over.

Free, interesting, on a weeknight, and actually on the island. We don't get to put all four of those together very often. The library is on Town Center Boulevard.

🚧 Quick local heads-up

  • Tuesday and Wednesday get windy. Northeast winds picking up to 20 with gusts near 30 Tuesday afternoon. Worth knowing if you've got bins out, a boat, or a trampoline.

  • Still closed: the restrooms at Thunderbolt Park, an uncovered slide at Moccasin Slough, and the sidewalk at the Main Street Boat Ramp. The pier is still open.

🏊 One more good thing: two weekends left at the pool

The Green Cove Springs City Pool closes for the season on Sunday, September 27, which means you've got this coming weekend and one more. It's open Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, 11 to 7.

$5 for adults, $3 for kids 2 to 17, $3 for seniors and active military, free under 2. ⚠️ Cash only. No cards, no checks.

And the bit worth knowing even after the pool shuts: the splash pad is free, and it's open every single day, 11 to 8.

🕰️ A bit of island history

Something new we're starting on Saturdays: a small piece of local history. Here's the first one.

Where does Fleming Island get its name?

George Fleming came to Spanish East Florida from Ireland around 1785. In 1790, the Spanish governor granted him 1,000 acres on this side of the St. Johns River for his military service, and he named the plantation Hibernia, the Latin name for Ireland, after the country he'd left.

He married Sophia Fatio the following year. Her father farmed 15,000 acres directly across the river and called it New Switzerland, after the country he'd left.

People were playing golf here long before the current course. There were links at Hibernia by 1895.

From Hibernia Pub's own history page. Got a piece of island history we should run? Send it over.

Before you go... tell me something good 💛

See a new business opening? Know about an event we should have on the calendar? Got a neighbor doing something wonderful, a local team having a big season, or just something good happening around Fleming Island?

Send it our way. This only gets better when all of us help find the good stuff.

❤️ Tell Us Something Good: A neighbor doing something kind. A kid doing something awesome. Something new going in or on around town. Anything that makes you think, "people around here should know about this."

📅 Submit an Event: Live music at a local restaurant, a fundraiser, festival, market, school activity. Anything locals can put on their calendar.

⭐ Get Featured: Own a local business? Tell us your story through a short interview and give the community a chance to meet the people behind it.

Have a good week,
