Morning, Fleming Island 👋

A lot of you joined this week, so hello and welcome. This lands on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday mornings, and it's simply the good stuff happening around the island.

And the heat broke. Eighty-eight today with a real breeze, after a Monday that felt like 106.

Here is your Wednesday. 🌴

☀️

88° / 74°

HIGH / LOW

TODAY AROUND THE ISLAND

Mostly sunny and properly breezy.

Northeast wind 8 to 17, gusting near 30. Slight chance of a shower after 5. No heat index worth mentioning, which is new.

📚 Three free things at the library this week

We think of the library as the place you borrow books. This week it is a yoga class, a legal clinic and a history talk, and all three are free.

Chair Yoga. Today, 11:30 to 12:30, Fleming Island Library. No booking, just turn up. The library has partnered with instructors who trained through the Christina Phipps Foundation, and in the library's own words, the class guides "members of the cancer community, family members, and those with limited mobility" through a gentle routine. All abilities welcome. Adults, 18 and over.

It returns on October 7 and October 21, then roughly every other Wednesday through December 16. Worth a note in your calendar if today is short notice.

Ask-A-Lawyer. Tonight, 5:30 to 7:00, Orange Park Library. No appointment needed. Licensed attorney volunteers answer questions on family law, housing including landlord and tenant, probate and estates, and contracts. It's first come, first served, free of charge, and if you have letters or a summons, bring them with you.

One thing to know before you drive over: they give guidance and point you to community resources, and they do not take on cases. It runs the third Wednesday of every month, so the next ones are October 21, November 18, and December 16.

And Thursday is the one we flagged on Monday. Local historian Bob Scallan on the three Clay County sheriffs killed in the line of duty between 1894 and 1913. Fleming Island Library, 6 to 7 PM, free, 18 and over.

🎪 Also today: the Active After 50 Expo

This one is in its eleventh year, and today is the Clay County stop. 11 to 3 at Orange Park Mall, 1910 Wells Rd. Exhibitors, live entertainment, and companies and services aimed squarely at the over-50s, all in one place.

Worth saying plainly: their site does not list an admission price anywhere. Signing up to attend is a name and an email with no payment step, so it reads as free, but we would rather tell you exactly what we know than guess on your behalf.

🎸 Music on CR 220

Whitey's has someone on every single night from tonight through Sunday.

Tonight Eric Collette
Thursday Eric Alebiso

Both 5 to 9 on the porch.

Friday is a double: Randy Jager 4 to 8, then Kattie Reddish 8 to midnight.
Saturday is too: Vibe 4 to 8, then Area 51 8 to midnight.
Sunday Chris Kellum, 2 to 6.

Across the road at Encore, which is 21 and over:

Tonight Karaoke with Ashe, 8
Friday ^LIFT^, 8
Saturday Backlash, 8
Sunday Chilly Rhino, 4

And Hibernia Pub has live music Friday and Saturday, 6 to 9.

🚧 Quick local heads-up

  • It stays breezy right through Thursday. Northeast winds today gusting near 30, and near 29 again tomorrow. Worth a thought if you have bins out, an umbrella up, or a boat on the water.

🎶 One more good thing: Concert on the Green

Ten days out, on the island, and free. Concert on the Green, Saturday, September 26, 6 to 9 PM, at the gazebo on the green behind the Market Drive shops in Fleming Island Plantation.

North of 40 Band, food trucks, and plenty of room to spread out on the lawn.

In the Plantation CDD's own words: "bring your trusty lawn chair or blanket for seating." Make an evening of it.

And that Saturday is filling up fast. A First Coast Vendor Village is on Village Square Parkway from 11 to 2 that same day, plus more. We will lay the whole day out for you next week.

Before you go... tell me something good 💛

See a new business opening? Know of an event we should add to the calendar? Got a neighbor doing something wonderful, a local team having a big season, or just something good happening around Fleming Island?

Send it our way. This only gets better when all of us help find the good stuff.

❤️ Tell Us Something Good: A neighbor doing something kind. A kid doing something awesome. Something new going in or on around town. Anything that makes you think, "people around here should know about this."

📅 Submit an Event: Live music at a local restaurant, a fundraiser, a festival, a market, a school activity. Anything locals can put on their calendar.

⭐ Get Featured: Own a local business? Tell us your story through a short interview and give the community a chance to meet the people behind it.

Have a good week,
