Morning, Fleming Island 👋

Ponte Vedra came to Fleming Island last night and took it, 31-18.

Today is the pick of the weekend. Tomorrow is hot, near 90 and feeling closer to 100, so take water if you're out in the afternoon. 🌴

🎭 One more good thing: there's a theater on this island

Fleming Island has its own theater. It's across the street from FIHS, and last night it opened a production of Blithe Spirit.

It's on Town Hall Circle, and it's a nonprofit community theater focused on teaching. They also help kids attend workshops tuition-free.

Four performances remain, and the next is tomorrow afternoon.

Blithe Spirit · The Island Theater · 1860 Town Hall Circle #54
Tomorrow, 2:00 PM, then Friday the 25th and Saturday the 26th at 7:30, and Sunday the 27th at 2:00.
$18 adults, $10 students with ID at the door. General admission; doors open 30 minutes before.

It's indoors and air-conditioned, and tomorrow afternoon is going to feel like 100 degrees. Sounds like a fun way to spend a hot Sunday.

And if there's something else going on around here I should know about, tell me. That's genuinely what the button below is for.

🕰️ A bit of island history

There has been a movie theater on Walnut Street since 1937.

The Clay Theatre opened in Green Cove Springs when the town still called itself the original fountain of youth. People came for the springs, and a town with tourists needed a cinema.

By the 1940s, the crowd was sailors. In the theatre's own words, it "drew in sailors from the nearby Naval Air Station, creating a vibrant scene on Friday nights with taxi cabs and white-uniformed sailors lining the streets."

It did well enough that a second cinema, the Cove, went up right next door. When the current owners opened the old safe, they found vintage ads selling "The Cove and Clay" together.

It ran as a cinema until 2014. The last film ever shown there was Monuments Men.

A pair of newlyweds found it vacant in 2017, spent a year restoring it, and reopened it in April 2019. It's now a wedding and events venue, so there's nothing to buy a ticket to. But the marquee is still up, and most of us have only ever seen it from the road.

Got a piece of island history we should run? Send it over.

Before you go... tell me something good 💛

See a new business opening? Know of an event we should add to the calendar? Got a neighbor doing something wonderful, a local team having a big season, or just something good happening around Fleming Island?

Send it our way. This only gets better when all of us help find the good stuff.

❤️ Tell Us Something Good: A neighbor doing something kind. A kid doing something awesome. Something new going in or on around town. Anything that makes you think, "people around here should know about this."

📅 Submit an Event: Live music at a local restaurant, a fundraiser, a festival, a market, a school activity. Anything locals can put on their calendar.

⭐ Get Featured: Own a local business? Tell us your story through a short interview and give the community a chance to meet the people behind it.

Enjoy the rest of it,
