🐾 Joey has been waiting 710 days
We ran Joey on our very first day, August 31. He is still at Safe Animal Shelter, and today is day 710.
He came in on October 13, 2024. That is one week short of two years in a kennel.
He is four, black and white, about sixty-seven pounds, and the shelter has him down as affectionate, playful, house-trained, and a sun lover. Their words: "He loves his people, belly rubs, bacon strips, water, and most of all his herding ball. Joey is the BEST at playing soccer with it and could play all day if you let him." And: "Despite his size, Joey is convinced he is the perfect lap dog."
Here is the part that explains the 710 days, and the shelter says it plainly, so we will too.
Joey gets anxious around new people and new situations, and he has some resource guarding, mostly in his kennel, where he cannot get away. He does best with one or two experienced adults, in a calm house, with no other dogs and no cats. He pulls on the leash.
He is not waiting because nobody likes him. He is waiting because he needs a particular home, and the shelter refuses to pretend otherwise. That honesty gives the right home a chance to be the right home. And after 710 days, Joey deserves for us to ask again.
Safe Animal Shelter, 1754 Cider Cove, Middleburg. Open every day, 11 AM to 6 PM. 904-375-9122.
Not in a position to adopt? They always need foster homes. A foster spot frees up a kennel, which is the thing that lets a shelter say yes to the next animal.

🎓 One more good thing: what the five actually did
On Monday we told you five Clay County high school seniors were about to spend a day running the county. They did it yesterday, and the county wrote it up last night.
They spent the day with elected officials, law enforcement, fire rescue, and emergency management.
Then they finished with a mock budget workshop, where they had to pass a balanced budget.
Five teenagers spent a full day inside county government, and they finished by trying to balance a county budget. That is a better civics lesson than most people ever get.
It is the third year Clay County has run the program, and the students were picked through a countywide application.
The county still has not named them. Two press releases now, no names and no schools. So the question from Monday stands: if one of the five is yours, tell me. I would still like to run the rest of that story.
Before you go... tell me something good 💛
