Morning, Fleming Island 👋
Fleming Island won at Orange Park last night, 49-24.
Everything we pointed you at on Friday is happening today, and the forecast held. 🌴
☀️
81° / 58°
HIGH / LOW
TODAY AROUND THE ISLAND
Patchy fog early, then sunny all day.
The fog should be gone by 9. Basically no rain, a north wind around 8, and it drops to 58 after dark. Tomorrow climbs to 87.
🏈 Friday night
Fleming Island 49, Orange Park 24. The Golden Eagles went on the road and scored 49. They are 3-3 on the season, but 2-0 in district play, and that is the record that matters for the postseason. It puts them second in 4A District 4, behind a St. Augustine team that has not lost all year.
Around the county
Middleburg 42, Ridgeview 8
Oakleaf 56, West Port 6
Atlantic 41, Keystone Heights 6

🚧 One more good thing: the 220 bridge is open
The County Road 220 bridge replacement and four-lane widening is finished. It opened to traffic yesterday.
The county announced it Friday morning and says the job finished ahead of schedule with no workplace accidents. When Phase 2 started in January 2025, the county said it would take about 16 months. It took 20. 🤔
Phase one started in December 2024 and included the intersection work at Rideout Ferry Road. Phase two started in January 2025, and that is the part most people mean when they say the bridge: a new four-lane span over Little Black Creek, replacing one built in 1947.
It made it 79 years.
Their line is that the work will "support better traffic flow and enhance connectivity along the corridor," which is a very county way of saying it is finally done.

🕰️ A bit of island history
The Spanish called Black Creek the White River.
Rio Blanco, on their maps. The Seminoles called it Wealuste. The name depended on who was doing the naming.
It was a working waterway long before it was scenery. The creek system reaches far into the county, and Fort Heileman used it to float hundreds of shipments of supplies to its storage buildings.
Middleburg sits at the fork of the north and south prongs. It has been called Garey's Ferry, Fort Heileman, and Whitesville, which makes the creek the most stable name in that whole neighborhood.
Even that is generous. An old Florida road map printed it as Buck Creek, which was simply wrong.
And the bridge that opened this week crosses Little Black Creek, which feeds it.
