Morning, Fleming Island 👋

Today's best bet for outdoor plans is the morning. Rain is most likely between 2 and 5.

Also worth knowing: the National Weather Service is flagging localized flooding through the weekend, then a nor'easter and tidal flooding next week. More on that Monday. 🌴

🏈 The Golden Eagles had a bye last night. Clay comes to the island next Friday.

🕰️ A bit of island history

Margaret's Walk is named for a woman who saved her family's plantation by turning it into an inn.

Margaret Seton Fleming married Lewis Fleming in 1837, and they raised seven children here.

Then the Civil War nearly took everything. Her oldest son, Seton, was killed at Cold Harbor in 1864, and the plantation house came through the war damaged.

The plaque in Margaret's Walk Park calls her "a heroine in her own time." It credits her determination with saving the plantation by establishing The Hibernia Inn.

The plaque also credits her with founding the historic St. Margaret's Episcopal Church on Fleming Island.

And one of her sons, Francis P. Fleming, went on to become Florida's 15th governor in 1889.

The statue in the park shows a young woman in mid-1800s dress, a nod to the family walking the old buggy path under the oaks to the community dock, where they picked up supplies from the river boats on the St. Johns.

If you're driving through Margaret's Walk for the yard sale this morning, now you know whose name is on the sign.
